April Flicks

This April brings a rain of good movies that you must go see!

These movies will inspire you after you watch the epic challenges that these new characters will face.  If this grabs your attention, you should look into Tuya’s Marriage, a film about a Mongolian girl who struggles to support herself and her family because her husband cannot. To do so, she must go against tradition, divorce and remarry. Tuya must find a new husband to support her, take care of the poor children and meager land, and maybe even her crippled, suicidal ex.

If foreign films aren’t exactly for you, then check out this American thriller, The Life Before Her Eyes.  Actress Uma Thurman (Batman & Robin, Bee Movie) plays the part of a housewife who lost her best friend to a school shooting fifteen years ago. In the present, the woman struggles against taunting memories of the shooting. In the past, she faces tension with her best friend up until the killing. As the story unfolds, deeper secrets are revealed.

Turning the page to love stories, U, Me Aur Hum is a tale that encompasses the very meaning of romance. When Ajay sees the beautiful Pia for the first time, he instantly falls for her.  He must work overtime to win over coy Pia, but when he finally does, the couple jumps into marriage. This movie challenges the very essence of love and its existence within a marriage, working to overcome obstacles that threaten their relationship. They find that even when they fall, they’re cushioned by friendship and devotion, making their marriage something out of the ordinary.

If crime is what you crave, check out Pathology, starring Milo Ventimiglia (Rocky Balboa, “Gilmore Girls”) as Harvard graduate, Ted Gray. As Ted moves up the chain and becomes an intern, his reputation as the best grows. He is invited to become part of an elite group devoted to pathology. He soon finds that the group is devoted to more than pathology, but to creating the perfect murder, one that an expert pathologist could not solve.  Ted must stay one step ahead of his crazed group of friends before he becomes the next victim in their game.

Immelman Tops Tiger

Immelman had goose bumps, Snedeker had tears, and Woods had too many strokes in PGA golf’s first major tournament of the season.

The 72nd Masters teed off with golfing great Arnold Palmer taking to the tee for the ceremonial opening drive in deep fog and finished in clear victory for a little known South African by the name of Trevor Immelman.

Immelman beat out Tiger Woods by 3 strokes, to win his first major tournament and the Green Jacket.  The ferocious course in Augusta, Georgia was able to tame many brand name golfers including Sergio Garcia, Vijay Singh, and Phil Mickelson but it truly broke the spirit of local favorite Brandt Snedeker who fell from contention after shooting a final round 77 finishing in a tie for 3rd.  Just days after declaring himself fully capable of winning all 4 major tournaments, Tiger failed to hit key shots and made many un-Tiger like mistakes to land in second place.

And if, by chance, you didn’t have a particular interest in golf lets talk cash money.  In the 4-day tournament Trevor Immelman won $1,350,000, Tiger Woods won $810,00, and Brendt Snedeker took home a mere $435,000.  The guy in last place, Sandy Lyle, shot 14 strokes over par and still took home $24,750, not bad for a 4-day workweek.

Transsexual Man Pregnant

Transsexual Thomas Beatie, 34, a pregnant man who used to be a woman is due to give birth on July 3. The Hawaiian ex-lesbian kept his reproductive organs and when his current wife Nancy found out she could not conceive, he stepped in. Beatie decided to stop his bimonthly hormone injections and had his first period in eight years. After one year and nine doctors, he was able to get pregnant using frozen donor sperm. In an interview with The Advocate, Beatie states, "Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy's family doesn't even know I'm transgender.” Others turned them away or referred them to a psychologist. Despite all the difficulties, the couple is happy to be expecting their first child, a daughter, in July

Beatie will appear on Oprah on Thursday, April 3.

90210 Returns!

The CW is releasing a spinoff of the popular 90’s phenomena 90210. The new take on Aaron Spelling’s teen-soap will again focus on a Beverly Hills family, according to Variety.com.  The Mills family moves to Beverly Hills with daughter, Annie and adopted son Dixon. Annie is the emo/theatre kid desperate to fit in with the “cool crowd.” Dixon (um, Dylan?) is a super-smart “bad boy” who has behavioral issues, good looks and a too-cool-for-the-universe attitude.

Fears rightly swirl around developing a spin-off to the beloved zip-code drama – after all, is it even possible to create a more deliciously bitchy cast than the first set of Hills girls?

Heather Mills Court Room Water Fight!

Yes, the Heather Mills/Paul McCartney divorce proceeding has finally come to an end! And what a finish! Mills claims she is satisfied with the $48.6 million settlement, yet her bizarre court room reaction tells another story. Mills allegedly poured water on McCartney’s lawyer after the proceedings concluded. The UK Daily Mirror reported “She was so angry, she tipped a glass of water over Fiona Shackleton's head, leaving her with soaking wet hair," one insider told the paper. "Everyone was stunned. That kind of behavior is just not acceptable."

Don’t worry Heather; we’re pretty sure $48.6 million will buy a lot of forgiveness.

Abe Lincoln goes Purple!

The U.S $5 bill got a makeover with a touch of the color purple! These new purplized bills will go into circulation on Thursday, March 14. The new design is the most recent release in a series of redesigned bills which are harder for counterfeiters to knock off. Don’t worry though! Abe Lincoln, the nation’s 16th President still appears on the front and the Lincoln Memorial remains on the back side. The most noticeable difference is the color according to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing who claims that “splashes of light purple at the center of the bill blend into gray near the edges.”

The Purplized will also be used on the $10, $20, and $50 bills, next up to be changed: the $100 bill!

Yankees Sign?.Billy Crystal?

To mark his 60th birthday, actor Billy Crystal will be signing a one-day, minor league contract with the New York Yankees to play on March 13 in an exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Despite the short-lived appearances of Michael Jordan and Garth Brooks on the field, Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig has given Crystal his blessing to play ball. Crystal has always been a lover of baseball and an avid Yankees fan; he will wear the uniform number 60 at the game on Thursday.

"I've been waiting 50 years for this call," Crystal said in a statement released by the team. "I'm overwhelmed by the generosity of the Yankees and Commissioner Selig. I know this'll be tougher than the Broadway Softball League, but I'm looking forward to helping the younger players, which by the way is all of them. Oops, I have to go Scott Boras is on the phone."

Has anyone else noticed the return of the boy bands? Will we be dusting off our 6-inch glossy photo pin of Joey McIntyre? In the past few weeks, announcements regarding boy-band reunions such as New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys have filtered, causing boy-band fans of the 90’s to emerge again.

The NKTOB crew’s news broke on the band's website, which had been dormant and is now back up and running in anticipation of the official announcement, which will be made in the next few weeks.

Backstreet Boys are back; seriously...well, in China.  The band will perform in China as part of the worldwide Unbreakable tour. The concerts will be the first mainstream Western pop concert in Nanjing and Hangzhou, and take place on March 4 in the prestigious Nanjing Olympic Arena and March 6 in Hangzhou Dragon Arena.
